The most famous national parks in Georgia include the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park.
Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is a well-known protected area in Georgia with a vast diversity of plant and animal life, where the distribution of worlds depends on the distribution of heat. The park is well-equipped for various types of tourism, so you will spend your free time here comfortably.
Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is the first protected area in the Caucasus with such status.
It was established in the late 20th century and, with an area of over 600 square kilometers, is one of the largest national parks in Europe. It is located in the central part of Georgia, 140 km west of Tbilisi.
The national park is situated at the intersection of several physiographic and historical-geographic provinces of Georgia, and this location determines not only its natural but also its ethnographic diversity. The park and its immediate vicinity are home to forests typical of the mid-mountain range: Colchis oak forests, oak-hornbeam, beech, beech-hornbeam, oak-beech, as well as high mountain landscapes. This is why Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is an important geo-ecological center in the Caucasus and a significant link in the unified chain of protected areas in the region.
The distribution of plants in the park depends on both the distribution of heat and moisture. In the northern and western parts of the park, precipitation reaches 1000 mm, while in the southern and eastern parts it is half as much. This distribution of precipitation determines the contrast of natural conditions and, as a result, the sharp change in landscapes.
The change in landscapes is due not only to the distribution of precipitation but also to changes in altitude and exposure. The difference in altitude between individual areas of the national park reaches 1500 m. Broad-leaved forests here are replaced by mixed, then pine and high mountain forests. Alpine and subalpine plants are widespread and can be observed at a short distance from each other.
The park is home to such species of flora as chestnut, Colchis oak, yew, spruce, and fir. Among the fauna species, the Caucasian red deer (Cervus elaphus), European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos fulva), griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus fulvus), black vulture (Aegypius monachus), and Caucasian grouse should be noted.
The national park is well equipped for various types of tourism. Mineral waters, the mountain-climatic resort of Bakuriani, monuments of the Bronze Age and the ancient period, several famous churches, and fortresses of the 9th-10th centuries are located near the park.
