The museum is located on the territory of Rabat complex. It contains the oldest manuscripts, epigraphic, archeological, numismatic, ethnographic materials, photo documents, fund of manuscripts and old printed books. A special place is given to the exhibition of stone carvings, as well as carpets and curtains.
The Akhaltsikhe Museum, with over 25,000 exhibits, is one of the oldest museums in Georgia. There are unique manuscripts and old printed books, papyrus of the XI-XIII-XV centuries, the fragments of a manuscript from the 16th century The Knight in the Tiger Skin, an edition of the Christian teaching printed in Italy in 1477, a Georgian-Italian dictionary published in 1626, psalms printed in the printing house of King Vakhtang VI in 1709 etc.
One of the most important collections of the museum is the fund of numismatics, which includes: dinar with Caesar Augustus, Roman copper and silver coins of the I-IV centuries, Byzantine gold and silver coins of the XI century, Seljuk, Mongol, Khuladoy coins of the XIII century, coins minted by Khan Kazan and Kvarkvare I Jakeli of the XIII-XIV centuries. Archeological collection contains materials, found on the territory of Samtskhe-Javakheti: weapons of Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, important monuments of Eneolithic, Early, Middle and Late Bronze Age, as well as antique period, agricultural tools, military weapons, national dress, family objects, wooden decorative samples, copper, silverware and tools, flags of craftsmen associations, carpets, curtains, embroidery and objects of crafts and trade. Noteworthy are photo documents and family archives kept in the museum, as well as exhibits telling about the activities of Georgians in Istanbul.
In 2009, the Museum of History of Samtskhe-Javakheti was enriched with 800 exhibits discovered during archaeological expeditions carried out within the framework of the Bak-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline project.
In 2012, the Akhaltsikhe fortress and the territory of Rabat were completely restored, respectively, the exposition of the museum was renewed and replenished with unique materials.
