History of the Museum

History of the Museum

The Adjara Art Museum was opened on December 19, 1998. It is housed in a building constructed in 1949 by architect Kakha Javakhishvili. The building's façade is decorated with a relief frieze created by sculptor Tamara Abakelia in 1951–1952.

The interior of the museum itself is inspired by motifs of medieval Georgian architecture, which creates a special atmosphere for getting to know art.

In 2015, the museum expanded its exhibition space to include a new art gallery, which allowed for more temporary exhibitions and cultural events.

Georgian painting and sculpture

The second floor of the museum houses a collection of works by Georgian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, including:
🎨 Niko Pirosmani is a cult primitivist artist whose paintings are imbued with naivety and deep philosophy.

Is it really accurate to say that the museum opened in 1998? I read somewhere else that it might have been established earlier. Can anyone confirm the exact opening year?

I find it curious that the article mentions the entrance fee is 2 Lari. Given the museum's diverse collection and events, this seems surprisingly low. Are there any additional charges for special exhibitions or activities, or is this genuinely the full admission price?

Is there any information about guided tours in the museum? It would be interesting to know if they offer English-speaking guides who can provide more context on the Georgian and international artworks.
