The Giorgi Leonidze State Museum of Georgian Literature has been working since the thirties of the last century. Each exhibit is unique - you won't find such a collection anywhere else.
In 1929, the foundation of the State Museum of Georgian Literature named after Giorgi Leonidze was laid by the anniversary exhibition of Alexander Griboyedov. And the first material for the museum was made up of items presented at this very exhibition.
The museum was officially opened in 1030 by initiative of Titian Tabidze and by decision of the Writers Federation. After that the museum started collecting exhibits of writers and public figures buried on Mount Mtatsminda - Dmitry Kapiani, Ilia Chavchavadze, Akaki Tsereteli, Nino Nikoladze and others. In 1931 Giorgi Leonidze was appointed head of the museum.
Along with the growth of the archive, the name of the museum also changed - in 1935, the Mtatsminda Museum was given the name "Museum of Georgian Writers", and in 1938, "Georgian State Museum of Literature". In the same year, the museum settled in the former palace of the deputy governor of the Russian Emperor in the Caucasus, where it remains to this day.
Most of the unique exhibits of the museum were collected during the period when the museum was headed by Georgy Leonidze and in 1967 the museum was named after him.
Today the State Literature Museum holds up to 130 thousand manuscripts, up to 2 thousand paintings and drawings, up to 27 thousand photographs, up to 1 thousand memorial items and more than 40 thousand books.
