The House-Museum of Georgian movie star Nato Vachnadze (1904-1953) was founded in 1985. It is located in the Andronikashvili family house, built in the early nineteenth century. The museum stores and exhibits memorabilia of the actress and her family members: furniture of the XIX – early XX century, carpets, curtains, dishes (Russian and French porcelain), paintings, graphics, sculptures, photographic materials, documents, books published about the actress, copies of films with the participation of Nato Vachnadze. The museum describes the history of a short, but very impressive, full of success and family happiness, a beautiful creative life.
Nato Vachnadze was formed as a megastar of the cinema screen back in the days of silent films, in the 1920s and 1930s, and at the peak of her career, Soviet cinema brought her splendor and grandeur in the Hollywood style. Thanks to her appearance and artistry, she deservedly turned into a legend of Georgian cinema. During the same period, the charismatic director Nikoloz Shengelaya appeared in the world of Georgian cinema. Great love was waiting for these two people ahead.
There is one episode that actually marked the beginning of the Nato and Nikoloz family: there was one Tbilisi evening in which poetry and song triumphed. The residents of Tbilisi organized a meeting with Mayakovsky, the hall was full of people. Nato and Nikoloz were late, couldn't reach the stage and stopped at the end. Mayakovsky noticed them and said at the top of his voice: "What are you hanging out there for? Come closer, I have to marry you" And, indeed, the poet crossed the couple who came up to him, and two days later they officially signed.
Nato played in sound films first – in "The Last Crusaders" by Siko Dolidze, then in the movie "Arsen" by Mikhail Chiaureli) re-performed the role of Neno after the silent film "Arsen the Robber"), later – in the film "Kajana", in which he played the role of a mother. Next was the poet's cradle.
On June 14, 1953, on his birthday, Nato unexpectedly flew from Moscow to Tbilisi. The plane crashed near the village of Nikoloz Shengelaya. The reason was called bad weather, but many then were sure that Nato was the victim of revenge by the Soviet KGB. The burnt remains of Nato were identified by her sister, Kira, thanks to a small family diamond ring.
