Samshvilde is one of the oldest fortresses of Georgia. Only ruins have survived to this day on this site. The first mention of the city-fortress was during one of Alexander the Great's campaigns in Kartli. Samshvilde is the central city of Eristavi from ancient times. It received its name during the reign of the first king of Kartli, Farnavaz. There is a fortress not only on the territory of Samshvilde, but also in Kartli.
The fortress is called Kldekari and has great cultural and historical importance for the region. Earlier it was a center and residence of Samshvilde.
