On the left bank of the Kura River is the youngest park in the Georgian capital, Rike Park (the Sands). There used to be a small island here. Gradually, the left arm of the Kura River became shallow and high, but during floods, it was filled with water again. After the water receded, silt and sand remained, so the area was called Sands or Rike.
The coastal area was not the most attractive in Tbilisi. In the 17th century, the Avchala Road passed through here towards Russia, and in the 19th century, there were various workshops and markets. The area's improvement began in the late 20th century. Old buildings were demolished, and in the early 21st century, work began on creating a modern park on the fixed sands.
Rike Park opened in 2010. The area was transformed dramatically. Flowerbeds of various shapes and sizes were arranged, with pedestrian paths winding between them. Interesting installations attract attention: a large white grand piano, unusual drinking fountains, and a chessboard with meter-high figures.
