Tsminda Sameba is the Cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church, located in Tbilisi on Mount St. Elijah. Many tourists come here just to see it with their own eyes and admire the splendor of the building.
Construction history
The construction of the temple began in 1995. Its construction was timed to coincide with two significant dates: the 1500th anniversary of the self-beheading of the Georgian church and the 2000th anniversary of the emergence of Christianity. Architect Mindiashvili, when creating this cultural monument, preserved architectural traditions that distinguish Georgian churches from others. The construction was completed at the beginning of the XXI century and already in 2002 the first church service was held here.
The height of the cathedral is 68 meters, and the total area of the building and the territory around it is more than five square kilometers.
The day of the consecration of the church was not chosen by chance. Nine years after the construction was completed, on the Day of St. George the Victorious (patron saint of Georgia), this significant event for the Orthodox inhabitants of Georgia took place. Representatives of many churches, including Russian, Romanian, Constantinople and others, were present here.
Scandalous nature of construction
The place where the cathedral was built is an ancient Armenian cemetery. When the builders were just starting to dig the foundation pits, they found the remains of people, tombstones and other elements of burials. But they did not take care of the reburial and the remains were rolled up in the foundation of the cathedral. Armenians living in Georgia expressed their obvious protest and dislike for this act.
Interesting features of the cathedral
Due to the fact that the temple is located on a mountain, it can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. This beautiful building impresses everyone not only with its beauty, but also with its size. It is important to remember that the cathedral is not one room, but a number of buildings: a bell tower, chapels, an academy, the residence of the patriarch, a hotel, parking and a cafe.
The temple is no less beautiful from the inside than from the outside. The walls are painted with frescoes, icons and paintings everywhere. Near the altar there is the main relic of the cathedral — a handwritten bible, and in the sarcophagus there is a cross that Saint Nino installed over Mtskheta in honor of the baptism of Georgia.
How to get to the temple
Since the cathedral is very large and visible from everywhere, it seems to many that it can be reached on foot. But this is not the case. Therefore, those who decided to visit this wonderful temple can be advised to get to it in one of the available ways:
