🧱 The History of the Old Town: From Ancient Walls to Modern Streets

Tbilisi's Old Town, known as Kala, is located on the picturesque banks of the Kura River, at the foot of Mount Mtatsminda. This district of the city is a veritable labyrinth of winding cobbled streets and ancient buildings, immersing every visitor in an atmosphere of antiquity and beauty.

The local two-story houses, built of brick and clay, create the city's unique medieval appearance. The walls of these houses are often covered with grapevines, and small gazebos, providing shelter from the heat, make a stroll through Old Tbilisi even more cozy. Staircases leading directly to the second floor and narrow streets winding through the hills give the district a special atmosphere.

This area was originally the site of the Kala fortress, founded by the Persians, around which a residential settlement—Tbilisi—grown over time. Historians also believe that the territorial boundaries of this area coincide with those that existed in the 12th century, when Tiflis was an important trade and cultural center.

However, the real blow to the city came in the 18th century, when the troops of the Persian Shah sacked and burned Tbilisi. Despite the destruction, local residents rebuilt their city from the ashes in just three years, while incorporating modern elements, giving Tbilisi its unique blend of old and new.
