Ascent to the lake
The path to the lake begins from the road between Lagodekhi and Kvareli, through the village of Uzuntala, then along the gorge of the Kabali River. From Tbilisi to the starting point of the route 151 km, from Lagodekhi – 12 km.
The route is of medium complexity, designed for 2 days.
The length is 18 km .
Equipment: climbing shoes, hiking poles, tent, portable stove, sleeping bag. There are sources of drinking water on the route, but it is better to have a small supply with you.
Since the Russian-Georgian border is located nearby, in order to pass along the scenic route, it is necessary to issue a permit at the border police office, which is located here, by the road. To do this, present your passport or other identity card.
The road from Kabali rises steeply uphill, you make the ascent to 1670 m. This section of the road is 16 km, it can be overcome by truck or SUV (four-seater or six-seater) to the summer farms.
Then you can climb on horseback or on foot. This section is only 9 km in length, but you need to climb 1190 m. On the descent, the horse may stumble, so more often you will have to walk, and lead the horse by the bridle.
Going up to the lake, you will enjoy views of the Alazani Valley, mountains and gorges.
There are summer farms nearby, so you can meet herding dogs. If you are camping near a farm, you may be disturbed by their barking at night.
There is another place to stay for the night a little further away, near the police border station. You won't hear dogs here.
Tents cannot be set up on the shore of the lake, because the border passes nearby.
It is better to admire Lake Martoti and its picturesque surroundings on the second day, after spending the night.
