The most ancient city of Georgia was founded downstream of the Kura River – Uplistsikhe. The settlement dates back to the 2nd millennium BC, and some writings say that the cave city was founded already in the 1st century BC.
At one time, the city had about 700 caves and defensive structures, only 150 have survived to this day. The city has survived many raids, one of which was during the Tatar-Mongol invasion, the raid ended with the destruction of more than half of the settlement. Despite regular sieges, residents did not leave their homes in the caves until the mid-19th century.
For history lovers in Georgia there is another attraction: in Surami, on a lonely cliff, there is an ancient fortress, about which there are legends. One of them tells about a dark, almost tragic story. The construction of the fortress was constantly stopped due to the numerous collapses of the walls of the defensive citadel. At that time, Surami was ruled by a prince who seduced a young village girl and left her alone, marrying a more profitable bride. Years later, the girl became a fortune teller, and in one of her visions she predicted that the walls of the citadel would become stronger only when a young man of princely blood was immured in them. As a result of the popular revolt, the beloved son of that prince became the victim.
