Sea vacation in Shekvetili. Magnetic sand, coniferous forest and military spirit of the city.
If you want to vacation in Georgia in a quiet place with few people, Shekvetili is ideal. A small resort village, which is known for its military prowess. Shekvetili is designed for families with children: the clean sea, coniferous forest and magnetic sands will contribute to the health of not only adults, but also children.
Shekvetili was once a major trading hub. This area was the site of bloody battles between the Russian-Georgian and Turkish armies.
The city had been both Turkish and Russian. In the first case, it was called Shefketil, and in the second - the fort of St. Nicholas, which is reflected in various historical documents. One of the most significant battles is the Battle of Shekvetili, which took place in 1853, on the night of 15 to 16 October.
The considerably superior Turkish forces attacked Shekvetili, which was protected by two infantry companies of the Russian Imperial Army and the Georgian militia. Up to five battalions came out of the enemy's side.
As a result, Shekvetili fell, the defenders suffered heavy losses, and the atrocities committed by the Turks in the captured fort and the surrounding area astounded and alienated local Georgian Muslims. They initially welcomed the Ottoman offensive.
Nowadays, Shekvetili is a small village, with the potential to develop the tourist sector. The local beach is made of the same magnetic sand, which is recognized as having healing properties. But here it's not as magnetic as in Ureki, it's weaker.
The sea is clear and the coniferous forest is not far from the beach. People are much less than in Kobuleti or Ureki. There's enough space even if you bring your own tent.
It is noteworthy that in the vicinity of the village there is a spa hotel, supposedly one of the best in Georgia. Shekvetili is positioned as a "quiet, comfortable place to rest. To find entertainment or organize an excursion program, you will have to go to Batumi.
