The “Golden Age" of Georgia is called the reign of Queen Tamara. In this brilliant era, the formation of the state and its culture was actively taking place. One of the most important stages in the history of the monastery of Kanzvisi is associated with this time.
This monastery is located on one of the hills of the Dzaba River valley, 3 km from the village of the same name with the construction in the Kareli region. The monastery complex consists of the remains of a wall and a two-story bell tower built into it and several churches: St. Nicholas, the Virgin and St. George.
Your attention will be attracted by the beautiful paintings preserved on the walls of the cathedral. Stylistically, it resembles the paintings of the monastery of Bethany and Timotesubani.
The monastery complex of Kanzvisi was founded by order of the royal throne. Art historians date this event to the junction of the XII-XIII centuries. The main building of this complex is the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is built of brick, which is not typical for buildings of that era.
It is for this reason that St. Nicholas Cathedral does not have ornaments characteristic of Georgian cathedrals. But the inner walls of the building are completely decorated with extremely beautiful paintings, brilliant, made on an azure background. It is a remarkable and exceptional example of Georgian art of the Middle Ages. The painting of Kanzvisi was commissioned by the feudal Chancellor Anton Glonistavidze.
In total, the cathedral has three entrances: west, south and north. Restoration work was carried out in the structure: the building was plastered and painted inside. Unfortunately, most of the frescoes have not been preserved in their original form, but, nevertheless, it is still a unique and most important monumental monument of Georgian painting of the Middle Ages.
