Walking through the sights of Batumi⬇️

What to see in Batumi? Promenade along the Batumi embankment in terrible heat.

Batumi Boulevard is the oldest and main attraction of Batumi. It was founded back in 1881 by the governor of the Batumi region. He commissioned gardeners Ressler and Reyer to build a park along the city embankment.

The boulevard is divided into old and new. There are many entertainment facilities on it: cafes, bars, restaurants, children's attractions, dancing fountains. The length of the boulevard is about 9 kilometers. Let's get acquainted with its sights.

Argo Cable Car

One of the main attractions of Batumi. Approximately at an altitude of 250 meters from sea level on Mount Anuria, the construction of the Argo cultural and entertainment complex, including a cable car and an entertainment center at the upper station, continued from 2010 until August 2013. The length of the cable car, along which 20 eight-seater cabins are constantly moving, is 2,586 meters, and the height is 256 meters. The journey in one direction takes approximately 15 minutes. At full load, the cable car can serve approximately 500 people per hour. Each cabin moves approximately at a speed of 5 meters per second.

Opening hours: in winter, daily from 11 am to 6 pm, and in summer from 11 am to 12 am. The fare is 25 lari -an adult ticket, children under 5 years old are served free of charge. From 5 to 12 years old, the ticket is GEL 5.

Sanapiro Restaurant on the embankment

An old Soviet cafe with a colonnade on Gogivashvili Street. This cafe has a special retro atmosphere. It's like I'm seeing white canvas suits and women in hats from the sixties. A large covered veranda facing the sea will give you coolness even on the hottest day.

Batumi Sea Port

It offers a gorgeous view of the snowy mountains and ships.  You can't walk here in the summer, because it's very hot, there are no trees. And being under the scorching sun is uncomfortable and dangerous for health. The building of the sea station is located here.

The Batumi seaport was opened in 1878 with the participation of the Rothschilds, Mantashev and the Nobel brothers. It is the deepest water port of Georgia. Currently, the port of Batumi, whose logistics location and infrastructure have turned it into a major transport facility. The port provides services for both international cargo transportation and passenger routes.

Also in the port of Batumi you can see a lot of fishermen, a very beautiful view of the clock tower, which is located on the Piazza, as well as the snowy-snowy mountains.

Fountain-tower of Chach

Next to the entertainment bay and the yacht club there is an original structure made in the Turkish style. This is the Chacha Tower, a 25-meter-high building with four towers, a clock and an observation deck. There are four pools around the structure, sensor cylinders nearby, with the help of which chacha was poured once a week. Now the tower is not functioning, it stands with iron grids at all entrances.

Wonderland Park

The Park of Wonders unites several attractions on a small territory: the Ferris wheel, the Alphabet tower, the sculpture "Ali and Nino", the Batumi lighthouse and the fountain of the Chach tower.

The Ferris wheel is an attraction for children and adults, as well as an excellent observation deck. From the top point there are stunning views of the bay, the mountains, Batumi and, of course, the sights. The ticket price is GEL 5. The height is about 55 meters. In about 10 minutes, the wheel makes a full turn.  Opening hours are daily from 18 to 12 o'clock at night.

There is also a very famous landmark - the Alphabet Tower. Work schedule in winter: from 12 pm to 9 pm, in summer from 9 am to 2 am. Adult ticket - 10 GEL, children under 7 years - free of charge. From 7 to 12 years - 2 GEL. The tower was erected in 2012. The author of the project was Alberto Domingo-Cabo, an architect of Spanish origin. He was inspired by the unique and one-of-a-kind Georgian alphabet. The alphabet is applied to a spiral metal ribbon encircling a 135-meter openwork tower. The ribbon resembles DNA, which is very symbolic, because the language is often called the genetic code of the nation. The top is crowned with a ball, inside of which there is an observation deck with a coffee shop. In the evening, the ball rotates around its axis.

The Park of Wonders has a children's beach and an observation deck. For one lari, you can watch birds, ships, the sea and mountains. We often take food for a walk and have picnics. It's great to walk when there are few people here. Very often, even in winter, you can see people swimming. The total length of the coastal zone is about 10 kilometers, the width is up to 50 meters. There are a lot of people here in the summer, ships and yachts are nearby. Therefore, I would not recommend, it is here to relax with the kids. Passage is free everywhere. The beach is pebbly throughout its entire length. Moreover, the pebbles can be quite large and sometimes sharp. I advise you to buy rubber beach shoes.

Sculpture "Ali and Nino"

One of the business cards and attractions of Batumi. A symbol of connection and mutual understanding between people of different nationalities. Tamara Kvesitadze, a sculptor and artist, was inspired to create it by the novel "Ali and Nino" by Azerbaijani writer Said Kurban. The peculiarity of the sculpture is that it is dynamic. Every day, starting from 12 o'clock in the afternoon, there is a fascinating and cyclical movement of statues. Every ten minutes, the lovers move towards each other, merge together and leave to start their journey again. The impression of the spectacle is enhanced with the onset of evening twilight, when the multi-colored backlight turns on. Very beautiful and romantic.

A place for cyclists

In addition to benches, huge shaped stones are placed on the territory, replacing benches. There are also many places with views of the mountains and the sea where you can have a snack, for example, delicious shawarma.

Batumi Lighthouse

The first lighthouse in Batumi was built of wood in 1863, and it shone with a white light. In 1882, it was completely rebuilt from stone, and it still retains its former appearance. The lighthouse is still functioning, and ships are sailing on it. If you are lucky, and the caretaker will allow you to climb, having overcome 75 steps, you can enjoy the views of Batumi. And, by the way, the lighthouse has very criminal coordinates – 41.6; 41.6.

Beautiful embankment

Musicians are playing on the street, where there are a lot of people. All along the embankment there are benches, various cafes, attractions. On the beaches there are changing rooms, showers and paths to the sea. There is not much garbage on the beaches. Restaurants are available here, so if you want to order something for yourself, you can go in and take it quietly.

When the wind blows on a hot day, it's a pleasure to walk, but without fresh air it's better to be in the shade.

Pier Batumi is the central pier and the famous meeting place on the boulevard. It is the longest and most beautiful on the embankment. There are several good cafes on both sides. We were recommended "Medusa". There is a disco bar at the end of the pier. In the daytime, you can sit on the pier, drink coffee, watch the waves. And in the evening - smoke a hookah, dance. There is also a playground and shops. It is located near the colonnade and the central entrance to Batumi Boulevard. This is a great place to walk.

In parallel with the bike path, there are several beautiful places and attractions: the central entrance to the embankment, fountains, a bamboo grove, a monument to Michel D'Alfonso, a colonnade, a summer theater, a bird nursery, as well as a monument to the gardener-decorator Jason Gordeziani.

In 1977, musical fountains became a new decoration of the central part of the boulevard. Coolness refreshes the day, with the onset of twilight a real fairy tale is born here. The play of colors with water drops also causes delight. A bamboo oasis is planted here next to the light and music fountain. It's nice to sit on a bench near green giants on a stuffy hot day.

There is also a wedding palace nearby. An unusual building, shaped like a dolphin or a shell. The registry office is open 24 hours. But not for tourists. Because the registration document issued here is valid only on the territory of Georgia.

The famous French nobleman Mikhail D'alfons, who lived here from 1885 to 1889, was the main horticulturist and decorator in Batumi. The foundation and development of Batumi Boulevard is associated with his name. In a short time, D'alfons turned an impassable coastal zone into a real miracle. For this, his contemporaries called him a good genius of the Batumi coast. It was D'alfons who saw the unique opportunities of the Adjara coast, which contributed to the development of the rich landscape and the creation of a place for recreation here.

Antique colonnades, built on Primorsky Boulevard in 1934 on the Black Sea coast, symbolized the entrance to the embankment. The idea of their creation belongs to the Batumi doctor. He brought the project from Italy, where he was on a business trip.

In the future, the project was implemented under the guidance of Kirakosyan, a famous Batumi architect. The colonnade consists of two sections, 10 snow-white columns each. A checkerboard floor is laid out in mosaic between the sections. During their construction, the coastline was much closer, so they harmoniously fit into the seascape.

Summer Theater

In 2001, a fire broke out in the summer theater. It took the city authorities 12 years to restore the theater. In 2013, it started functioning again. The Summer Theater is located in the very center of the city, in a beautiful park running along the embankment. In the warm season, the theater hosts various concerts, festivals, performances and productions.

There is a monument to Pushkin, installed in 1960. Not far away, behind the summer theater, on Ninoshvili Street, opposite the Tourist hotel, there is a bird nursery. On the territory there is a lake, a decorative bridge, a statue. Turtles and parrots also live in the nursery. Bird families live behind a low fence: swans, pelicans, guinea fowls, peacocks, ducks. Birds are in contact, approach the fence, look at visitors and beg for food. We managed to pet the Pelican. It was very cool and interesting.

Batumi Boulevard

At every step there are numerous rows of bicycles for rent. There are also sports facilities: sandy fields for playing football, volleyball, playgrounds with exercise equipment, tennis courts, outdoor pools, playgrounds, a red bicycle path running along the entire embankment.

A small cozy corner in miniature resembles a natural landscape, as if in the land of the rising sun. There are paths made of natural stone between the trees at the entrance to the garden. And there is a bridge across the pond, surrounded by a composition of Japanese plants and coniferous shrubs. Water is bubbling, benches, plants, interesting maze paths are everywhere.

The building was built in 1897 as a men's gymnasium designed by Polish architect Alexander Shinkevich. In 1935, a two-year teachers' institute was opened here. In 1938, the institute was named after Shota Rustaveli. In 1945, the institution was formed as a pedagogical institute, on the basis of which the university was opened in 1990.

Octopus

Octopus, the former cafe "Fantasia", an example of modernist art of the 60-80's. It was built in 1975. The residents of Batumi nicknamed the mosaic art object "Octopus". At the beginning of the two thousandth cafe closed. Restoration began in January 2018. The building was restored according to archival photos.

The team of architects had to do a lot of work to make the "Fantasy" look the same as 40 years ago. As part of the project, the territory near was also put in order. The alley and fountain have been restored. The octopus was rediscovered quite recently: in August 2019.

Sea coast

Events are often held on the seashore. For example, a kite festival, or a wine festival, or concerts. As well as sports events: football matches, contests. You can always find something to do on the embankment: build castles out of stones, fly kites, ride a scooter, walk in the park, eat ice cream, play sports. And, of course, to swim and sunbathe, enjoy the sun and rest.

There are several attractions right on the course: inflatable trampolines, chains. You can also rent an electric car here.

Dolphinarium

It was built in 1975. In the 90s it was closed. After a 20-year pause, on the initiative of the City Hall and the Kartu Foundation, a completely new dolphinarium was activated in Batumi. It is one of the components of the research scientific center of flora and Fauna of the Black Sea. The dolphinarium is located at the very beginning of the park on May 6th. The dolphinarium is built in the form of an amphitheater and is divided into four sectors. Dolphin shows in the season from May to September are held daily. In the cold season, their number is reduced to 2-3 per week. In summer, the Batumi Dolphinarium organizes a show three times a day. Among the artists are seals and dolphins. Their performance is not just tricks, but also dancing, singing and even juggling objects.

Prices may vary, so I recommend checking the relevance of prices on the official website before visiting. Tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket office.

Metal Hearts

The structures are scattered along the entire coast in various variations and are a distinctive feature of the boulevard and a favorite place for photographing.and

White magnolia

This is a large housing complex and the most frightening house in Batumi. We will make a separate report about him and show everything in detail.

Ardagani Lake

Many years ago, there was a large swamp on the site of the lake. At first, this area was a real suburb, where off-road reigned, and walking along the coast was an impossible task. However, after a large-scale reconstruction of the resort, Lake Ardagani turned out to be within the boundaries of modern Batumi.

The lake got its name from the Ardagan detachment stationed in this area during the war of 1877-1878. It is unknown whether the reservoir is artificial or of natural origin.

In 2009, dancing fountains appeared on the lake, beautiful compositions of water and music are created in the evening with lighting. During the day, you can meet families of ducks swimming for each other and diving for food. There are two small islands in the western part of the reservoir. One of them is completely covered with willows, and the other is chosen by waterfowl, building nests on a piece of land. Both islands are the property of a coastal restaurant. If in summer you can walk along them and eat at the same time, then in winter tourists will be able to get only to the first island.

This place is popular among newlyweds who come here for photo shoots. Once upon a time, a very funny situation happened on Lake Ardagani. A concert was organized on the lake, to which the presidents were invited. Frogs sang along with the orchestra throughout the concert. That's a pun.

The area around is mainly built up with modern houses. The most noticeable residential complex "Alliance Palace". There is another amazing building nearby, resembling an inverted bottle. But in fact it is not an inverted bottle, but a piece of paper and a pen. From the height it is clearly visible.

While walking around the lake, you can notice a sculpture in the form of a gymnast. The sculpture depicts the reunion of a man and a woman and symbolizes the constant change of time. The rotation is installed at the beginning of Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Alley, near the House of Justice, singing fountains and the Ukrainochka cafe. The place of its location is named in honor of the sheikh and as a sign of gratitude for the tens of thousands of palm trees donated by him to decorate Batumi. Women and men walk on the surface of the disk and glass, as if they are fused together, embodying an endless stream.

The Alley of Heroes, located next to the lake, begins with the monument "Frozen Fountain". Sculptures of famous figures are located along the alley. In the center of Heroes Square there is a sculpture Rotation, the author of which is Tamara Kvesitadze, who is also the author of the famous sculptures "Ali and Nino". The alley is a very pleasant place for leisurely evening walks. It's very hot here during the day. The walk around the lake ends near the openwork Black Sea arch.

This corner of Batumi is similar to Athens. The appearance of a piece of ancient Greece in Georgia is not accidental. It is believed that it was here that the Greek Argonauts sailed for the Golden Fleece. Now, in memory of this, there is an acropolis here and Greek dishes are served.

Ардаганское озеро в Батуми

We walked along the embankment, along the old boulevard and got acquainted with many sights and beautiful interesting places.

That's how many interesting and amazing places you can see here.

The weather in Georgia seems to be experiencing some unusual patterns, particularly in Batumi. An alarming heatwave has hit the city, making a leisurely promenade along the Batumi Boulevard a real challenge. With temperatures soaring, it's essential for locals and tourists alike to take necessary precautions to stay safe and cool. Climate anomalies like this serve as a stark reminder of the importance of climate change awareness and the need for sustainable practices to protect our planet's delicate ecosystems. Stay hydrated, seek shade, and let's work together to address the impact of such abnormal weather events.
