Ancient city-fort of Georgia: Khornabuji - fortress of Queen Tamara. An independent route for tourists.
Hornabuji is a medieval fortress or fortress of Queen Tamara. Back in the 19th century, M.Y. Lermontov himself admired the local picturesque nature! The historical landmark is an ancient port city. Despite the fact that the building is quite large, you can only see it from a short distance of 200-300 meters.
Hornabuji is a fortress of the Middle Ages, which is usually called by locals the fortress of Queen Tamara. It is the oldest fort city on the territory of Georgia, which existed in the first millennium BC. This is why this place is unique, many tourists visit it more than once with great pleasure, remaining under great impression.
Hornabuji Fortress is a very picturesque place. At one time, the famous Russian poet of the 19th century M.Y. Lermontov visited it, who was inspired by the local nature. Alexandre Dumas also spoke very flatteringly about Hornabuji in his notes.
At the end of the 20th century, excavations were carried out on the territory of the fortress. During the work, many objects of medieval life were discovered. So, in the 1970s, the remains of ancient infrastructure, wine cellars, underground tunnels, and several chapels were discovered. These findings turned out to be unique and of great value. At the moment, the fortress of Hornabuji has not been fully studied, archaeologists believe that it is fraught with many more different mysteries. This statement makes tourists visit this unusual place even more.
The peculiarity of the Hornabuji fortress is its secrecy. Despite the fact that the fort itself is quite large, it can only be seen at a distance of 200 – 300 meters. This feature of the landscape surprises many tourists, but still there is a place from where you can enjoy all the beauty of the fortress. A great view opens from the side of the Alazani Valley.
Getting into the fort is quite difficult. To begin with, you must arrive at the Dedoplis-Tskaro municipal center, then, overcoming the railway tracks, move towards the canyons. Then a couple of kilometers to the fortress there will be a dirt road that will not give you any difficulties in overcoming it. 300 meters from Hornabuji, you can see a sign that says that you are in the Vashlovansky Nature Reserve.
But for those who do not want to use a vehicle, there is an opportunity to get to the fort on foot through the "Eagle Gorge". The journey will take you only a couple of kilometers, and during the road you will be able to enjoy the beauty of the local nature.
