The monument to Ion Meunargia in Zugdidi, located in the park of the same name, is dedicated to the outstanding Georgian writer, critic and publicist. Jonah Meunargia was a tireless fighter for national and personal freedom, as well as an active participant in the public life of Georgia.

Meunargia was born on November 26, 1852 in the village of Tsaish, Zugdidi region. He was educated at the Martvili parish school, Kutaisi Theological School and Tbilisi Theological Seminary, after which he continued his studies in Europe, including the University of Geneva and Paris. There he met Victor Hugo and immersed himself in the rich cultural life of the French capital.

Having returned to his homeland in 1878, Jonah Meunargia actively participated in literary and social life, worked in Georgian and Russian magazines and newspapers, and also contributed to the spread of literacy among Georgians. He held elected positions and was the deputy head of the city of Poti, as well as a conciliator in the markets of Zugdidi, Senaka and Lechkhumi.
