  • Description

The Basilica of Our Lady of Valais, located in the Georgia region, is a significant architectural and cultural monument. Originally built in the 10th century as a cross-domed church, it underwent significant changes after the destruction of the dome and arches. Between 1561 and 1564 the building was rebuilt and converted into a three-nave basilica, giving it a unique appearance.

A notable feature of the basilica is the inscription on the southern pillar, consisting of 45 lines, made in the Asomatru style. The inscription talks about the renovation of the building carried out by Kaikhosro Atabagh Didiimidi's wife, and contains references to famous historical figures such as Didiimidi's grandfather Constantine, who was the king of Kartli.

In 2006, by decree of the President of Georgia, the basilica was assigned the category of an immovable cultural monument of national significance. This status emphasizes its historical and cultural significance.

A visit to the Basilica of the Virgin Mary in Valais will be interesting for lovers of history, architecture and culture. Here you can see unique architectural elements, as well as read historical inscriptions that give insight into the region's past and its prominent personalities. This place is an important part of the cultural heritage of Georgia and is worthy of the attention of both tourists and researchers.
