  • Description

The Orthodox Church of St. Mariam (19th century) in Telavi is an outstanding example of 19th century architecture, representing a domed structure in the form of a cross. Built of brick and plastered on the inside, the outside is whitewashed, giving it a majestic appearance. Four vaulted arms form the shape of a cross, at the intersection of which a high twelve-arched dome is erected. The eastern sleeve, ending with the apse of the altar, is longer than the others.

The church has three entrances: on the southern, western and eastern branches, all doors are arched and gradually expand inward. The apse of the sanctuary is semicircular and in its center there are two arched windows. On the sides of the sanctuary there are two-story shops connected to the main premises of the church through doors in the western wall. The church is connected to the altar through a wide arched exit, and a staircase at the east corner of the exit leads to the second floor ground floor and hiding places at the top of the sink and arch.

It is worth visiting the Church of St. Mariam in order to enjoy the unique architecture, learn more about the religious history of the region and plunge into the spiritual atmosphere of this holy place. The church is of interest to both believers and lovers of historical buildings and architecture. This place also attracts researchers and tourists interested in the cultural heritage of Georgia.
