Avlabari metro station. Akhmeteli-Varketili line of the Tbilisi metro
- Description
Avlabari metro station, formerly known as 26 Komisari, is part of the Akhmeteli-Varketili line of the Tbilisi Metro and is located between the Tavisuplebis Moedani and 300 Aragveli stations. Opened on November 6, 1967, the station received its modern name after the historical quarter of Tbilisi Avlabari. The deep pylon station was reconstructed in 2007 and then again in the period 2018-2020 to its original appearance in 1967.
A special feature of the station is the marble cladding on the track walls and the lanterns on the escalators, returned during the last reconstruction. Interesting fact: the name of the Avlabari quarter comes from the Arabic term for “quarter outside the city walls.” In Soviet times, the quarter and the station were named after 26 Baku commissars. On January 29, 2009, a fire occurred at the station due to a short circuit, but the consequences were minimal.
