The Institute of Oriental Studies named after G. Tsereteli in Tbilisi, founded in 1960 on the initiative of academician Georgy Tsereteli, is a leading scientific and educational institution in the field of Oriental studies. In 2010, the institute became part of Ilia State University, continuing its activities in the study of languages, history, literature and culture of the peoples of the East, as well as modern political, social and economic processes in the countries of the Near and Middle East.
The Institute has a structure that allows for in-depth and comprehensive research. It includes the Department of Ancient Oriental Languages, departments of Semitology, Indo-Iranian languages, Persian philology, Turkology, Byzantinology, as well as centers for the study of Japanese culture and Yazidi studies. The rich library of the institute contains an extensive collection of scientific literature and periodicals.
The Institute actively cooperates with leading international universities and research centers, participates in many international conferences and scientific events.
