“Fire is in good hands” - a heroic mosaic at the Tbilisi fire station
- Description
Mosaic “Fire in good hands” is a monumental panel from 1979 created by artist Givi Kervalishvili on the facade of the Ortachala fire station. It is not just decorative, but embodies the idea of protecting the city and its cultural symbols.
The main character of the mosaic is a giant figure in the style of St. Florian, the Christian patron of firefighters, directing a stream of water towards the burning city. Behind are the recognizable architectural monuments of Tbilisi: the Sioni and Metekhi temples, the Opera and Ballet Theater, the Sports Palace, the Dynamo stadium, the funicular station and the train station.
The panel combines heroic aesthetics, Soviet modernism and symbolism of cultural protection. It not only decorates the facade, but also emphasizes the importance of the fire service as the guardian of the life and history of the city.
