- Description
If you are interested in the art of the 18th-19th centuries, unique furniture and household items of that time, then the Smirnov Museum is exactly your place. Located at: st. Galaktion Tabidze, 20, in Tbilisi, this museum was founded in 1985 and is a legal entity of public law (LEPL) under the control of the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia since 2010. The museum itself is housed in a house built by the architect German Otto Simonson, who was the grandson of the maid of honor Alexandra Smirnova-Rosetti (1809-1882). In 1985, Mikhail Smirnov, a descendant of this outstanding personality, donated to Georgia a house and valuable relics that had been owned by three generations of his family. These artifacts became the basis for the creation of the museum's collection. In the Smirnov Museum you will find a rich collection of paintings from famous artists of the 18th-19th centuries, such as Franz Xavier Winterhalter, Ivan Aivazovsky, Franz Kruger and many others. In addition, the exhibition includes sculptures, lithographs, objects of applied art, unique furniture from Europe and Russia of the 18th-20th centuries, as well as household and personal items. An integral part of the museum is also its library, containing valuable books, as well as an archive of photographs and documents. Open to visitors every day, except Mondays, from 11:00 to 18:00.
