Merab Kostava House-Museum
- Description
Merab Ivanovich Kostava was a man who all his life defended views that were sharply different from the generally accepted ones, and was also an extremely talented poet and musician.
He was one of the founders of the social movement that fought for the independence of Georgia.
The views of the figure throughout his life caused concern in the authorities, because of which he was arrested many times and served sentences, but were recognized by the people.
Merab Kostav's creativity is very extraordinary, but the main message of his creations is love for his homeland and respect for his origin.

In 1977, Kostava and Gamsakhurdia faced arrest and imprisonment for highlighting the looting of church relics and the unjust deportation of Meskhetian Turks, leading to charges of anti-Soviet propaganda. Kostava was sent to Siberia to serve his term. Unlike Gamsakhurdia, who recanted his views for a potentially lighter sentence, Kostava stood firm in his beliefs. He was released in August 1987. A year later, in 1978, both were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the U.S. Congress. In 1988, Kostava helped establish the Society of Saint Ilia the Righteous, an organization advocating for Georgian independence. From 1988 to 1989, he played a key role in organizing peaceful pro-independence demonstrations in the Georgian SSR. Kostava faced another arrest on April 9, 1989, but gained freedom after 45 days. Sadly, on October 13, 1989, Kostava's life ended in a car accident. In 2013, Georgia honored him posthumously as a National Hero, awarding him the title and Order.
