Monument to Vazha Pshavela
- Description
The monument to Vazha Pshavela in Tbilisi is dedicated to the famous Georgian writer and poet of the 19th century, whose work left a significant mark on the cultural heritage of Georgia. The author of the composition is the sculptor G. Ochiauri, and the architect is R. Kiknadze. The monument is installed on a distinctly simple low pedestal at the beginning of a green boulevard, unity with the surrounding nature and architecture. Leader Pshavela is depicted in national clothes, with a burka draped over his shoulders. The sculpture is surrounded by elements reflecting the ancient, pagan aspects of Vazha Pshavela’s work and life - a basalt altar, deer antlers, a sculpted deer head, “sacred” boulders from the Aragvi gorge, and a symbolic “tree” of deer antlers. These details are reminiscent of the mountain culture, ancient customs and connection with nature that characterize the poet’s works. The monument is of interest to anyone interested in Georgian literature, history and culture, and it provides an opportunity to better understand the legacy of Vazha Pshavela and his contribution to Georgian literature.
