  • Description

Mikhail Tverskoy Church in Tbilisi is a unique architectural monument located in the capital of Georgia. Built in 1911-1913, the church is dedicated to Mikhail Yaroslavich Tverskoy, a prince who was canonized after his death at the beginning of the 14th century. The church is an example of the New Russian style, standing out against the backdrop of traditional Georgian architecture. The building was built on the principle of a compact cubic shape with a hipped dome of the bell tower and multi-stepped kokoshniks, which visually resembles a sailing ship.

The church is also interesting for its history: it was built for the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty with funds mostly donated by the wife of the governor in the Caucasus, Count Illarion Ivanovich Vorontsov-Dashkov. During Soviet times, the temple remained operational, which was rare for those years. Currently, services are held in the church in Georgian.

The interior of the church resembles Russian Orthodox churches. The furnishings include icons, modern wall paintings and a three-tiered iconostasis in the semicircular arched niche of the apse. The choirs are located in an unusual semicircular niche, adding originality to the interior space.

A visit to the Church of Mikhail Tverskoy will be of interest to lovers of architecture and history, as well as those seeking spiritual solitude in the atmosphere of an Orthodox shrine. Tall cypress trees grow along the path to the temple; their number symbolically corresponds to the age of Jesus Christ. This place attracts attention with its unique style and rich historical association.
