The Metekhi Cathedral of the Mother of God is one of the oldest shrines in Tbilisi, located on a cliff in the historical center of the city, on the left bank of the Mtkvari River. The temple was built in the 6th century during the reign of King Vakhtang I Gorgasali and became not only an architectural symbol of the city, but also a place of spiritual power. At the foot of the cathedral, one of the best viewing platforms in Tbilisi opens up with views of the Old Town, the Bridge of Peace, the Narikala Fortress and Rike Park. Nearby is a statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of Tbilisi.
