Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures of Georgia Mtatsminda
- Description
Mtatsminda Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures of Georgia is a significant landmark in Tbilisi, located on the picturesque Mount Mtatsminda around the Church of St. David “Mamadaviti”. Founded in 1929, the necropolis is the final resting place of many famous Georgian writers, artists, scientists and national heroes.
The history of the pantheon begins with the funeral of the Russian writer Alexander Griboedov and his wife Princess Nino Chavchavadze. Later, many other prominent personalities were reburied here. Many tombstones were made by famous sculptors such as V. Demut-Malinovsky, Y. Nikoladze and E. Amashukeli, which makes the pantheon a real open-air museum.
The Pantheon is managed by the Tbilisi Municipality and has important cultural significance. Visitors can reach it by cable car, which has been in operation since 1905, or on foot. This is a place not only for those interested in the history and culture of Georgia, but also for those who want to enjoy the unique atmosphere and panoramic views of the city.
