The house did not look particularly remarkable from the outside and, it would seem, was of no interest if it were not for the information obtained that four panels with paintings were preserved at the entrance. The house was once owned by the merchant Belgar Fomich Vartanov, who himself lived on the upper floors, and rented out the apartments on the lower ones.
It's amazing - how the wooden decoration of the front door was not pulled apart, how the curly frames were not removed from the walls, but gently touching the fading heritage, you understand. Not a tree at all, but an artful plaster stucco, which has excellently survived so many years.
Four girls are Greek oras, the gatekeepers of heaven, the daughters of Zeus and Themis, the goddess of the seasons. Guess for yourself where spring is, where summer is, where autumn is, and where winter is.
Once someone tried to paint over the oil-painted panels, but the residents were able to defend the beauty. It is a pity that it is quite dark in the front door at the entrance and on a sunny day, so you can, in principle, not even think about high-quality pictures.
House No. 18, on Dadiani Street, corner with Lermontov Street. This house of the 1880s-90s belonged to the merchant of the first guild Vartanov Belgar Fomich. It was both a residential and an apartment building. A merchant family lived on the upper floors, and the lower ones were rented out. This front door has an extraordinary painting and beautiful stucco. At first, and even at second glance, it seems that this is a tree. But it's a cast! The painting is so skillfully executed that only by looking closely at the chips, feeling, you can understand that the front door is not wooden! The paintings depict four girls, and, having seen them, it is not difficult to guess that these are the seasons. The door deserves special attention.
The front door is always open, there are no locks here.
