In the heart of the picturesque region of Shida Kartli, among the mountain peaks, the majestic Rkoni Castle rises. This historical monument, dating back to the mid-8th century, impresses with its beauty and architectural splendor. Built entirely from stone blocks, the castle is a unique complex that includes a fence, a church, a tower, a scout tower and palace ruins.

The castle fence, built on two levels, is a magnificent example of multi-stage architecture. With a height of five meters, it delights with its structural complexity, having two tiers: a solid lower one and an upper one decorated with loopholes. The walls of the fence are reinforced with buttresses, creating an impressive impression of inaccessibility. Two entrances, northwestern and southern, give the castle additional mystery.

To the southeast of the fence, in the most elevated place, rises the Rkoni castle complex. On its western side it is located on a relatively flat surface, while the southern and western walls are closely pressed against the rocks, and the northern and eastern walls are confidently fortified with massive structures. Built-in fireplaces, niches and loopholes give the castle walls a special character, and the scout tower perched on the top of the mountain provides a unique viewing experience.

The complex's church, dating from the 13th century, is an amazing combination of stone work and spiritual energy. The structure of the hall, with its majestic vaulted roof supported by two hanging arches, delights with its exquisite architecture. Inside the church, fragments of paintings have survived, decorating the interior and bringing real magic from the times of the 13th century.

Visitors, immersed in the atmosphere of antiquity, will be able to enjoy the unique combination of historical heritage and natural splendor that Rkoni Castle offers.     Epic setting, yet somewhat underwhelming. The ruins in the mountain valley are awe-inspiring, and yes, the drone shots are fantastic. However, the area lacks proper signage or info boards, making it hard to fully grasp the history. Plus, it wasn’t very kid-friendly—steep paths and rough terrain made it tricky. Definitely an adventure, but not the most visitor-friendly one.

    Огромные стены крепости, вдруг возникающие прямо из земли, восхищают, но дорога туда требует немного больше ухода. Тропа живописная, да, но уставаешь пока поднимаешься. А когда попадаешь внутрь и видишь оставшиеся здания — это, конечно, интересно, но все слегка запущено. Видно, что могло бы быть лучше, если бы уделяли больше внимания.

    Захватывающие башни и захватывающие виды — одно дополняет другое. Спуск в юго-западную башню по узкой лестнице становится отдельным приключением, особенно с шуршанием крыльев летучих мышей. Такой опыт не забывается!

    Рама времени будто остановилась. Массивные стены, олицетворение силы и величия прошлого, даже через строительные леса ощущаются их величие. Жалко, что восстановление не позволяло проникнуть внутрь, но величие и мощь видны даже снаружи. И, честно говоря, ожидание только подогрело интерес. Обязательно вернусь.

    Невероятная атмосфера древности! Уже на подходе чувствуешь, как каменные ступени переносит тебя в другой век. Пространство внутри поражает множеством скрытых уголков на разных ярусах – настоящий лабиринт для исследователей. Конечно, небольшие реставрационные работы чуть-чуть напоминают о настоящем, но они никак не мешают наслаждаться величием крепости. Вход бесплатный, и людей почти нет – идеально для неспешной прогулки и размышлений. Абсолютно нет чувства спешки и суеты, будто время тут замедляется. Обязательно стоит заглянуть, особенно если ищешь уют и покой в историческом антураже.
