Ali Fortress (Mtskheta Cross Fortress) in Shida Kartli, Georgia.
- Description
Ali Fortress, located in the picturesque region of Shida Kartli, just a few steps from the village of Mtskheta Jvari. This architectural miracle, personifying the late Middle Ages, rises on the right bank of the picturesque Cherathevi River.
Ali Fortress is not just a historical structure, but evidence of a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Strategically located on an ancient highway, it protected the city of Ali, which was an important trade and economic center in the region.
In the 17th century, the fortress was fortified by George Saakadze and became part of the defense system along with other fortresses. The fortification lasted until 1757, when it was captured by the Leks. The complex includes the inner part of the fortress and the outer fence, built of cut stone and mortar. The fence occupied a huge area, approximately 1 hectare.
Today, Ali Fortress remains an impressive, albeit badly damaged, structure. Archaeological excavations on the southern slope of the fortress revealed a three-layer settlement, as well as various buildings and even a pool of water inside the fortress.
The surrounding area of the fortress is also rich in history, with archaeological finds such as a bronze statue, images of fantastic animals and male sculptures. Particularly impressive is a 7th-century bronze buckle depicting a fertile tree and lions.
For lovers of history, architecture and archeology, Ali Fortress will be a fascinating guide to the past. Visitors can experience the spirit of antiquity as they stroll through the area where ancient pottery was produced and enjoy views of the picturesque surroundings.
We invite you to immerse yourself in the amazing heritage of the Ali Fortress, where each stone tells you its own story.
