Vanis-Kvabebi cave complex, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Georgia

Georgia is a country where history is intertwined with nature, and one of the most breathtaking evidence of this is the Vani cave complex, immersed in the grandeur of Samtskhe-Javakheti, in the municipality of Aspindza, along the right bank of the Mrkvari River.

The origins of this ancient cave complex go back to the 8th century, and over the following centuries it underwent major changes. In the 12th century, it became a monastery of the feudal Gurgenidze family, and under the leadership of Queen Tamari, a process of reconstruction began, leaving a magnificent legacy to this day. However, a terrible earthquake in 1283 again collapsed the caves, and only in the 14th-16th centuries did monastic life come to life again. But this was not the end of the trials, because in 1551 and 1576 the complex was taken and plundered first by the Persians and then by the Ottomans, leaving only ruins.

Today the Vani complex is a unique combination of historical artifacts and natural beauty. Consisting of 16 floors, it houses almost 200 caves, including cloisters, agricultural storage facilities, churches, tunnels and burial grounds. The centerpiece of the complex is the domed Church of St. George, impressive with its exquisite details and architectural designs.

Under the gates of the church there is a crypt where amazing carved details of the iconostasis were discovered. On the terrace rises an oval tower, part of a defensive structure guarding the approaches to the complex.
