Church of St. George Sakir, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Georgia
- Description
The Church of St. George Sakire is a pearl of the architectural heritage of the 19th century, immersed in the picturesque landscapes of the village of Sakire in the Borjomi region of Samtskhe-Javakheti. Its exquisite appearance is impressive at first glance: a domed structure with a square base, culminating in an elegant semicircular apse in the east, while the western wing welcomes visitors with a bell tower, as majestic as the entrance. The second path into the church is open from the south, inviting explorers to enjoy its beauty from different angles. Small domes surrounding the main one add to the grandeur of the place. The exquisite architecture, sculpted from ashlar and topped with metal roofs, exemplifies the talent and dedication of local craftsmen. The domes and part of the bell tower, painted in deep blue, give the church a special charm, as if every element is imbued with a sacred spirit. Arched doors and windows decorate the facades, giving them a sophisticated look. Legend has it that the construction of this temple was possible thanks to the generosity of all families who had at least one son.
To visit this unique location, head to the municipality of Borjomi, then follow the paved road leading through the Sakiruli River valley for 25 kilometers. The path there promises to be no less exciting than the place itself, so don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy every moment of this travel excursion.
The purpose of your visit to this magnificent church is not only to enjoy its beauty and historical significance, but also to feel the unique atmosphere of devotion and spirituality that permeates this holy place.
