In the heart of the mountainous region of Borjomi, in the ancient village of Timotesubani, stands a monastery that has witnessed the greatness of times and faith. Built at the turn of the 12th-13th centuries at the behest of Shalva Eristavt-Eristavi Akhaltsikheli, the owner of Tori, this sacred temple is not just an architectural miracle, but also a spiritual symbol of the nation.
The majestic central temple, consecrated in honor of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, is an integral part of the rich cultural heritage of Georgia. Its dome, decorated with exquisite azure bricks, takes you back to an era of great construction and faith. The height of this sanctuary, reaching 28 meters (including the cross), and its impressive dimensions - 19 meters wide and 11 meters long - are impressive in their grandeur.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the monastery is its unique paintings, dating from 1205-1215, during the reign of Queen Tamar. This work of art is not only perfectly preserved to this day, but also amazes with its complexity and beauty. Each fresco is like a window into the past, revealing to us the world of Georgia’s spiritual heritage.
On the northern terrace of the monastery there is a small Basilica of St. Barbara, and in the immediate vicinity of the temple you can find the remains of a stone tomb, frozen in time.
We invite you to experience the history and spirit of this amazing place. The Timotesuban Monastery of the Virgin Mary is not just a place on the map, it is a journey into the past that will leave in your heart an unforgettable trace of faith and the greatness of the spirit of Georgian culture.
