Nedzvi Monastery, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Georgia
- Description
Nedzvi Monastery is a pearl of Georgian architecture of the 9th century, built by the disciple of the great saint Gregory Khandzveli, St. Theodore Nedzveli. This architectural masterpiece is comfortably located in the picturesque Nedzviskhevi gorge, in the vicinity of the modern municipality of Borjomi, 10-12 kilometers from the city of Akhaldaba, on the banks of one of the tributaries of the Mtkvari River.
The monastery itself, which originally stood in this place in the form of a three-church basilica, was forgotten for a long time. Its ruins, left behind for centuries, only reminded of the once mighty spiritual center. However, in the 20th century, thanks to large-scale restoration work (carried out in 1948 and 1962), the monastery was brought back to life. During these studies, the original layout of the church was discovered, giving it a special architectural status. It turned out that Nedzvi was the largest of the known three-church basilicas in Georgia. Its longitudinal walls were decorated with stepped columns and arches, and the apses had various shapes - both rectangular and semicircular.
Today, visitors can enjoy not only the majestic architecture of the monastery, but also magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and forests. A visit to the Nedzvi Monastery is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of Georgia, feel its spiritual heritage and enjoy the splendor of mountain nature.
We invite everyone who appreciates cultural heritage and loves the grandeur of nature to take a trip to the Nedzvi Monastery and discover the amazing world of history and beauty that awaits you in the heart of the Georgian mountains.
