  • Description

In picturesque Svaneti, between narrow gorges and snow-capped peaks, rises the Church of St. George in the ancient village of Zhakhunderi. Its history dates back to the 11th-12th centuries, when craftsmen cut stone to erect this majestic structure.

The church is a hall with a grandiose vault, supported by massive arches, which, like keepers of time, carry the history of centuries. The interior decoration, although it came to us in small fragments, still leaves its mysterious traces on the walls and vault. Five windows penetrate light inside the temple, illuminating its mysterious corners and architectural details.

The facades of the church, restrained and modest, speak of the spiritual modesty of the local residents, who have maintained their faith for centuries. On the eastern window you can see delicate decor, as well as two crosses and lapidary inscriptions that seem to whisper about the past of this place.

With its two entrances - rectangular in the west and arched in the south, the church welcomes its visitors with a quiet invitation to the sacred threshold of history and spirituality. From cut shirimi stone, it seemed to have grown from nature itself, becoming part of this amazing landscape.

We invite everyone who wants to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of antiquity and mystery to visit the Church of St. George in Svaneti. Here, every stone, every arch, every hint of painting will tell you its amazing story, leaving an unforgettable impression of the great culture and heritage of Georgia.
