Church of St. George of the 17th century in the village of Nageberao
- Description
The 17th-century Church of St. George in the village of Nageberao, Samegrelo-Upper Svaneti, is an outstanding example of religious architecture and spiritual heritage of the region. The Nakharebo Monastery, to which the church belongs, is located on the territory of the Martvili municipality and is surrounded by an ancient cemetery, giving the place a special atmosphere of silence and solitude.
The church was built by Anton Chkondideli, who not only initiated its construction, but also enriched the monastery with sacred relics, ancient icons, vast estates and peasants. In 1788, the leader Katsia Dadian exempted all church estates from secular taxes, which significantly influenced the financial stability and development of the monastery.
Anton Chkondideli died at a ripe old age in 1815 and was buried in the monastery that he himself founded. Today, the Church of St. George is not only an active religious site, but also an important historical monument. The place attracts pilgrims seeking spiritual solitude, as well as researchers and tourists interested in the history and culture of the region.
