Church of St. George in the village of Sudzhina
- Description
The Church of St. George in the village of Sudzhuna in Samegrelo - Upper Svaneti is a historical and religious place located four kilometers from Abashi station. The church was built at the end of the 17th - beginning of the 19th century by Anton Chkondideli and is a three-nave domed structure with three apses in the east. The walls and dome are decorated with arches, and the entrances have carved edges. The church was built from white cut stone, which gives it a special architectural sophistication.
To the south of the church there is a tall two-story bell tower, built of the same stone and decorated with arches on four sides. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was also a small wooden church on the territory of the church, and huge linden and cedar trees grew in the yard.
The history of the church is closely connected with local culture and religious traditions. Sujuna was the watermelon residence of the Chkondi people and occupied an important place after Martvili. The church preserves many valuable icons and crosses, including large icons of St. George, made in silver and decorated with precious stones. The relics of St. George and the icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God are also kept here.
In 1989, divine services were restored in Sujun, and since then the church has been a functioning convent. The first prayer after the restoration took place on May 6.
The Church of St. George is an important center of the Orthodox faith and a place where you can see unique historical and religious relics. Every year on April 23 (May 6, new style), the Day of the St. George Icon is held here, attracting many parishioners and pilgrims.
The Church of St. George in Sujun is not only a significant religious site, but also an architectural monument of interest to historians, architects and tourists interested in the cultural heritage of Georgia.
