  • Description

Among the mighty mountains of Svaneti, in the village of Tsvirmi, steeped in centuries-old legends, stands the Tsvirmi Temple, dedicated to St. George. Its history goes back more than eight centuries - since its inception in the 12th century. The temple attracts attention with its architecture: a hall type, complemented by a semicircular apse on the eastern side and an extension on the north. Inside the temple space, you will be surprised by the unique fresco painting dating back to the 12th century, and the altar, highlighted by an iconostasis made of stone and wood, adds a special solemnity to the place. The facades of the temple, modest and undecorated, give it a strict but sublime appearance, and the semicircular window in the apse creates a play of light and shadow inside the sacred walls.

This ancient temple pays tribute to the skill of the builders of the past: its walls are made of semi-finished stone with lime mortar, and the wall joints are decorated with pure cut stones. The extension to the temple, rising nearby, impresses with its rugged beauty, built with dry masonry from wild stones.

The Tsvirma Temple is not only an architectural heritage and historical evidence of the rich cultural tradition of Svaneti, but also a place where you can feel the spirit of ancient times and immerse yourself in an atmosphere of mysticism and mystery. This is a place for those who seek not only beauty in buildings, but also a connection with the spiritual roots of this land.
