Cathedral of the Resurrection of the Savior Kadar (church)
- Description
Cathedral of the Resurrection of the Savior Kadar is a Georgian Orthodox church located in the north of the village of Old Abashi, on an open field, 7 km from Abashi, Samegrelo - Upper Svaneti. This temple, built no earlier than the 14th century, is a rectangular brick basilica without a dome.
The building has entrances from the south and west, and in the eastern apse there are three narrow windows. There were two more windows on the west side; the building originally had a cornice on the south and west sides, which was eventually demolished. Above and on both sides of the south entrance door are inlaid light colored stones with twisted carvings. Inside the sanctuary, fragments of paintings have been preserved, which are of significant historical and cultural value.
Unfortunately, the church is in a deplorable state. Every day it is destroyed by precipitation and plant roots. At the moment, it is in urgent need of conservation and restoration in order to preserve the architectural heritage for future generations.
