Nogi Fortress in Samegrelo-Upper Svaneti, Georgia.
- Description
In the heart of picturesque Samegrelo, at the top of the village of Noga in the municipality of Martvili, rises the ancient Nogi Fortress. This historical artifact that adorns our land has a long history dating back to the 16th-17th centuries. In its rich history, the fortress served initially the Jaiani family, and then the Dadiani.
Nogi Fortress is a unique architectural marvel consisting of a double elliptical fence and four majestic towers. Between the fences an impressive space is created, about 2 meters wide. Three of the towers - north, west and east - are framed in a round shape, while the south tower stands out with its square appearance. The craftsmen used various types of stone with lime mortar, creating a fortress that became not only a place of defense, but also a work of art.
In recent years, the Leg Fortress has undergone impressive rehabilitation work in 2015 and 2019, giving it a second life. Today, visitors can enjoy the restored beauty and historical heritage of this unique structure.
For those who appreciate the beauty of ancient buildings and crave immersion in historical stories, the Leg Fortress will be a fascinating guide to the past. Here, among the walls pierced by time, each stone will tell its own story. A visit to the Nogi Fortress is not only a fascinating journey into the past, but also an opportunity to feel the spirit of antiquity, which remained unshakable in the heart of Samegrelo.

New road all the way to the castle. Not a popular tourist destination so no one there. No guide and no fee. A neighbor showed us how to enter through the large wooden door although it's about a meter and half above the ground. Very excellent work has been done in restoration. Small place as far as similar castles in Georgia, but well preserved. It's possible to climb on tower, but the ladders to the other towers are deteriorated and unusable. A small chapel that looks like it's being used recently. Beware of large hornets... a huge nest in one inaccessible tower creates a dangerous situation with these very aggressive bees.
