Church of St. George Joisubani, Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti, Georgia
- Description
The Church of St. George Dzhoisubani, also known as “Mtskhetis Jvari”, is located in the magical region of Racha, among picturesque hills and meadows, in the village of Shromisubani. This historical monument has its roots in the depths of the 9th-10th centuries, when this majestic temple was erected. Despite the turbulent flow of time, it continues to impress with its splendor and mystery.
The church is a hall building with a semicircular apse, as if calling the view towards itself. Inside, through the dust of centuries, you can see fragments of pilasters, skillfully carved from shirim cut stone. Although the 1991 earthquake caused severe damage to the temple, its eastern side is relatively better preserved, continuing to tell the story of thousands of years.
The facades of the church are decorated with ancient reliefs depicting scenes of the meeting and Annunciation of Mary and Elizabeth, as well as mysterious figures with halos, as if called upon to keep the secrets of the past. The stone inscription in the ancient Georgian Asomtavruli script, decorating the eastern façade, seems to beckon those who seek to feel the spirit of antiquity.
Visiting this location is not only a chance to immerse yourself in the rich history of Georgia, but also an opportunity to feel the magic of time enveloping every stone of this magnificent temple. For those who value cultural heritage and strive for unique experiences, the Church of St. George Joisubani is a must-see.
