- Description
The Church of St. Nicholas in Racha, also known as the Church of the Rocket, is one of the most impressive architectural monuments of the 11th century, located in the village of Patara Oni, Ambrolauri municipality. This historical temple, commissioned by the Rachin eristav Kakhaber, delights with its hall type of structure, ending with a magnificent semicircular apse in the east.
Passing through the majestic supporting arches that support the vault of the hall, visitors plunge into the atmosphere of centuries-old history and spirituality. Restored in the 1970s, the iconostasis of the temple is decorated with exquisite ornaments, admiring their details and symbolism.
The facades of the church are impressive with rich decorative carvings and reliefs, and three entrances from different sides add architectural harmony and interest to it. The materials used in the construction - pure hewn shirimi blocks and whitish limestone for the doors, windows and decoration of the eastern facade - only emphasize the craftsmanship and grandeur of this wonderful structure.
The Rocket Church is a living testimony to the history and culture of Georgia, as well as an important place of pilgrimage for believers. Its majestic architecture and rich history attract researchers and art lovers from all over the world, making it an unforgettable place to visit.
