Not far from the picturesque village of Skhvava, in the municipality of Ambrolauri, the impregnable Kvaratsikhe Fortress rises, as evidence of the centuries-old history of this region. Built in the 11th century on a high rock, it carried through the possessions of kings, conquerors and feudal lords, leaving us today with incredible traces of the past.

In the 16th century, Kvaratsikhe witnessed the conquest of Kartli by King Simon I, and at the beginning of the 18th century, the immersion in the history of the feudal Iashvili family. The fate of the fortress was changeable, and since 1769 it again returned to the ownership of the royal power. Here, in 1802, the bloody event of the beheading of Akhaltsikhe Pasha Sabud took place. And soon, in 1810, during the annexation of the Imeretian kingdom to the Russian Empire, Kvaratsikhe surrendered to the Russian army.

Kvaratsikhe is an impregnable fortress, surrounded by mighty walls and fortified with towers, as if by a guardian of time. Passing through the gate, you plunge into the atmosphere of antiquity, where a two-story residential tower, round in shape, a small church, an ancient swimming pool and the ruins of other buildings have been preserved.
