The Cross Pass is the highest point of the Georgian Military Road
- Description
The Cross Pass (Jvari Pass) is the highest point of the Georgian Military Road, located at 2395 m above sea level. This picturesque place connects the Terek Gorge with the Aragvi Valley and is part of the historical route between Tbilisi and Vladikavkaz.
It received the name "Cross" in 1824, when a stone cross was erected here - a landmark for travelers. Previously, it served as a symbol of the watershed in the Great Caucasus and was mentioned by such writers as Pushkin, Griboyedov and Lermontov.
Today, the pass is marked by an obelisk, and nearby is the famous Arch of Friendship of Russia and Georgia (1983), from where stunning panoramas of the mountains open up.
The route to the pass remains a key tourist and transport section of Georgia: part of the European road E117, with developed infrastructure and opening throughout the year, except for extreme weather conditions.
