Although the exact date of construction of the church remains a mystery, the Holy Trinity Church of Gergeti, judging by ancient sources and architectural style, took root in the 14th century, the heyday of Georgian church architecture. The name "Gergeti" is closely connected with the location of the temple, for it is located on the territory of the village of Gergeti, to the left of the Tergi River, opposite the administrative center of the gorge - Stepantsminda.
The legendary cross, which originally stood on Trinity Hill, became the beginning of the monastery's history. Gergeti was considered a holy place, and for centuries one of the most precious shrines was kept here - the Cross of St. Nino. This place was a hiding place for relics and evidence of Georgian history. When visiting the Gergeti Trinity, you should remember that this is not only a historical place, but also a functioning monastery. Visitors must abide by the monastery's rules: women must wear dresses and cover their hair, and men must avoid appearing in shorts.
