Bor Cathedral, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Georgia
- Description
In the depths of Mtskheta-Mtianeti, in the picturesque village of Dzegvi, stands the majestic Bor Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Pillar. This amazing temple, sophisticated in its architecture, dates back to the 10th century. Within its walls you can feel the grandeur of the times of the past, every stone, every detail is intertwined with history and faith.
Bora Cathedral is a hall building with a semicircular apse, majestically inscribed in a rectangle on the eastern side. The only entrance, located on the south side, is an arcaded portal that, like a bridge, takes you from the bustle of the world to the world of spiritual harmony. The walls of the church, although they have lost their roofs, still speak of the splendor of the barrel vault that once adorned this place.
Walking inside the temple, your gaze falls on fragments of paintings from the 11th-12th centuries, which, although they have lost their original shine, still radiate their mysterious influence. Every picture, every ornament reminds of the times when faith was an integral part of the life of every Georgian.
Particular attention is drawn to the monumental composition in the conch depicting cherubs and Christ seated on the throne. This majestic scene, decorated with blue stones and pearls, seems to transport you to a world of spiritual beauty and grace.
Although the façades of the temple remain simple, the inner beauty and splendor of its architecture compel one to honor its grandeur and inspire reflection on ancient times. The Bor Cathedral is not just a building, it is a testament to the history and spiritual depth of Georgia, which is worth exploring and knowing.
A visit to the Bor Cathedral in Dzegvi is an opportunity to plunge into the world of grandeur and spiritual beauty, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of ancient times and feel the influence of great history on modern times.

Stepping into this ancient sanctuary felt like traveling back in time. The weathered sandstone walls held an unspoken history, whispering secrets of centuries past. It was as if the air itself was charged with the spirit of a legend—a mystical presence lingering quietly. Amidst the peaceful interior, I found an unexpected kinship with a space that has stood steadfast for a thousand years. Truly, a humbling and hauntingly beautiful experience.
