Ananuri Castle, located on the Georgian Military Road 70 km from Tbilisi, is one of the most impressive historical monuments of Georgia. Strategically located at the confluence of the Aragvi and Vedzatkhevi rivers, it served as the main stronghold for the Aragvi Eristavis, the rulers of this region.
The castle was built in the 16th century and for two centuries played a key role in the defense of Transcaucasia. It blocked the path from the Daryal Gorge, providing protection to the central part of the Eristavate. The fortress attracts attention with its unique architecture: it consists of towers, churches and other structures, including the Gvtaeb temple-tomb and the Church of the Assumption.
The history of Ananuri is full of bright and disturbing events, including the storming of the fortress in 1739 and persistent resistance during the invasion of Agha-Magomed Khan in 1795. After the annexation of Georgia to Russia at the beginning of the 19th century, the castle served as a stronghold for the Russian garrison.
Despite the fact that over time the fortress fell into disrepair, its remains still inspire admiration. On the territory of the fortress you can see well-preserved church buildings, the remains of a swimming pool and bathhouse, as well as a tower with a pyramidal roof.
Ananuri Castle has been proposed by the Georgian government for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List, highlighting its importance and uniqueness.
A visit to Ananuri Castle will allow you not only to get acquainted with the rich historical heritage of Georgia, but also to enjoy the magnificent landscapes surrounding this ancient monument.
