Shavnabad Monastery, Kvemo Kartli, Georgia
- Description
Shavnabad Monastery, also known as the St. George Monastery, is comfortably located in the southeast of Georgia, in a picturesque corner of Kvemo Kartli, in the municipality of Gardabani. Its history is rich in legends and stories, making it a place where history and mysticism meet.
According to legend, in 1795, during the period of the Persian conquests, when Tbilisi was captured, the Persians began to plunder the city, but their intentions were thwarted by a mystical horseman in a black cloak, known as “Shavi Nabadi”. Every night, when the Persians returned with their spoils, this mysterious horseman attacked them, bringing them misfortune and fear. The Persians were so scared that they decided to leave Georgia.
The Georgian people believed that this was the act of St. George, who, as it seemed to them, came to their aid at the most critical moment. That is why a monastery in honor of St. George was erected at the site of these events. Here, among the picturesque mountains, you can feel the greatness of the past and honor the memory of those who defended Georgia in difficult times.
A visit to the Shavnabad Monastery is not only an opportunity to immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere and hear amazing legends, but also to enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains. This place is ideal for those who are looking for unusual adventures and seek to understand the spirit of Georgian history.
