Iori is a river-artery of the Caucasian plateau and the steppes of Kakheti
- Description
The Iori River is a natural boundary between the forested Caucasus Mountains and the vast Kakhetian steppes. The river is about 320 km long: it originates in the Greater Caucasus, crosses Georgia and flows into a reservoir in Azerbaijan.
The Iori is a key water carrier for the region. Along its valley stretch gallery forests that provide an oasis of life among the dry slopes and steppes. These forest strips are home to lynx, wolf, brown bear and the graceful gazelle.
Rare birds on the river include eagles of prey such as the Egyptian and steppe peregrine falcons, as well as imperial eagles. The Iori Valley is an important migration corridor and habitat.
The unique ecosystem is protected: Iori Managed Reserve protects gallery forests along the riverbed, and to the west is Chachuna Managed Reserve with desert-steppe vegetation and bird observation points. Ancient fortresses can be found along the river, reminding us of the rich history of the region.
