Black Rock Lake is an alpine lake on the border of Georgia and Dagestan
- Description
Black Rock Lake (also known as Grdzeli or Khelakheli) is a high-mountain lake on the border of Georgia and Dagestan, located in the Lagodekhi National Park (~2700 m above sea level). The route is considered one of the most picturesque and difficult in the country.
The three-day hike starts from the park's visitor center, leads through beech forests, a subalpine zone and an overnight stay in shelters (Meteo Shelter and Demidovo Hut), and then to the Kochala Ridge and the lake. The route runs through ecosystems that transition from forests to alpine meadows.
The view of the gorges, Alazani - as if in the palm of your hand, and the mountains on the horizon create a feeling of "heavenly silence". Along the trail, you can often see noble wild animals - aurochs, chamois, deer in pairs, as well as birds: snow partridges, eagles and black grouse.
The route is ~38-40 km long with an altitude gain of up to 2500 m, requiring athletic training, navigation and hiking skills. If you plan to relax and enjoy the views, it is better to divide the route into 3-4 days.
This is a place for those who value moments of unity with nature, alpine silence and inspiring horizons of the Caucasus. Huge peaks, icy meadows, a calm lake and the freedom of the trails - Black Rock Lake creates a strong impression.
